How to Keep Your Flowers Fresh for Longer

How to Keep Your Flowers Fresh for Longer

Fresh flowers bring beauty into your space, and a few simple habits can help you enjoy them for longer. Here’s how to care for your bouquet once it arrives.

Start with a clean vase

Wash your vase with soap and water before arranging your flowers. A clean vase helps prevent bacteria from building up in the water.

Trim the stems

Cut about 1–2 cm from each stem at an angle with clean, sharp scissors or shears. Re-trim the stems every couple of days to help them take up water.

Remove leaves below the waterline

Any leaves sitting in the water can decay quickly. Gently remove them while keeping the foliage above the waterline intact.

Refresh the water regularly

Fill the vase with fresh, room-temperature water and change it every one to two days. Rinse the vase when you do. If your bouquet comes with flower food, follow the packet instructions.

Choose a cool spot

Keep your flowers away from direct sunlight, heat, air-conditioning drafts, and ripening fruit. A cool, shaded spot is usually best, especially during warm weather.

Remove fading blooms

As individual flowers fade, take them out of the arrangement. This keeps the bouquet looking its best and helps the remaining stems stay fresh.

Every flower variety has its own natural vase life, but these small steps can help your bouquet look lovely for as long as possible.
